Best Time: Last third of night

How to perform Tahajjud prayer

Tahajjud is the night vigil prayer that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never abandoned. It brings inner tranquility and acceptance of duas.

1

Wake Up & Wudhu

Wake up approximately 40 minutes before Fajr Salah. Perform a complete Wudhu (ablution) with the intention of purifying yourself for Tahajjud. Brush your teeth, renew your focus, and stand before Allah.

2

The Rakats: Flexible Devotion

Pray in sets of 2 rakats. Maximum 12 rakats, minimum 2. You may pray 8, 6, or 4 rakats. If you offer Tahajjud daily, it attains the status of Sunnah prayer; if occasionally, it is Nafl (voluntary). Each rakat includes Surah Al-Fatihah and additional Surahs.

Tip: Recite long Surahs like As-Sajdah, Al-Mulk, or Al-Ikhlas for deeper reward.
3

Post-Prayer Dhikr & Durood

After completing the Tahajjud prayer, sit in contemplation and recite the following adhkar for immense blessings:

The Grand Supplication (Dua)

Recite with full concentration:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Transliteration: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum bi rahmatika astagheeth, La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen.

Meaning: O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek help. There is no deity except You, glory be to You, indeed I have been among the wrongdoers.

❓ Questions & Answers: Teacher & Parent Discussion

Practical insights for parents guiding children and teachers addressing classroom queries about Tahajjud prayer.

Teacher: At what age should children be encouraged to pray Tahajjud?+
Parents can gently encourage children after the age of 7 to pray night prayers occasionally. After 10, they can practice waking up for Tahajjud once a week. The key is love for worship, not pressure. The teacher advises building a routine of Fajr first, then adding Tahajjud slowly.
Parent: My teenager finds it difficult to wake up — any practical tips?+
Teacher: Yes! Set an alarm 10 minutes earlier each week, place the phone away from bed, make sincere dua before sleeping, and start with just 2 rakats. Consistency over quantity. Also, avoid heavy meals before sleep and take a short nap after Zuhr if possible.
Teacher: Can Tahajjud be prayed in congregation?+
Parent follow-up: I've seen groups praying together. The teacher explains: Tahajjud is preferably prayed individually at home, but it is permissible to pray in congregation occasionally, especially in Ramadan (Tarawih is different). However, the sunnah is that the Prophet (PBUH) prayed it alone, except sometimes with companions.
Parent: If I miss Tahajjud, can I pray Qada (make up)?+
Teacher: There is no qada for voluntary night prayers, but you may pray Salat al-Duha (Ishraq) after sunrise as compensation for missing Tahajjud. Best is to be consistent and repent for laziness, but Allah is All-Forgiving.
Teacher: What is the fastest way to build Tahajjud habit for a working parent?+
Parent: I struggle with sleep. Teacher: Start by setting intention before sleeping, sleep early (after Isha), and ask Allah for tawfiq. Even 2 rakats with a heartfelt dua transforms your day. Use the "last 10 minutes before Fajr" technique — short but powerful.
Tip for parents & teachers: Tahajjud is a conversation starter about tawakkul, trust in Allah, and the sweetness of faith. Encourage with stories of Prophets.
