Dua When Entering Mosque

Dua When Entering Mosque

Dua when entering the mosque

A gateway to mercy: prophetic supplication

اللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي اَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allāhummā iftah lī abwāba raḥmatikā
O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

meaning & significance

This dua is recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for anyone entering a mosque. The phrase "open the doors of Your mercy" is both literal and spiritual. Physically, one steps into the house of Allah; spiritually, the believer asks Allah to let mercy permeate the heart — mercy that brings tranquility, forgiveness, and acceptance of worship. The doors of mercy include every blessing from Allah: guidance, barakah (abundance), and closeness to Him. Reciting it mindfully transforms an ordinary entry into a profound act of worship. Scholars emphasise that mercy (rahmah) is the same attribute from which "Ar-Rahman" (the Most Merciful) is derived, so we ask the Merciful to let His mercy surround us the moment we enter His house.

teacher & parent dialogue
teacher (mr. ibrahim) The dua is concise but carries immense depth. Do you discuss the meaning with your children before they enter the mosque?
parent (umm yusuf) Usually we just say it quickly. I want them to feel the connection, not just repeat sounds. How can we explain it better to a 7-year-old?
teacher (mr. ibrahim) I tell them: imagine the mosque has many doors, and behind each door is something beautiful from Allah — like peace, love, and help. We ask Allah to open those for us.
sunnah etiquettes: enter with the right foot, recite this dua, then pray tahiyyat al-masjid (greeting the mosque). When leaving, recite: "Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik" (O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty).

Note: The dua is authentic (Sahih Muslim). Mercy (rahmah) includes material and spiritual blessings.
